The Inverted Umbrella: Navigating the Winds of Business Scaling

Cold, torrential rain, high winds from the north, and an inverted umbrella.

Not exactly the early September I had planned. My expectations weren’t in line with reality. I was expecting carefree, warm and sunny days. I wanted to swim and walk every day before saying goodbye to summery weather.

We’ve all been there, your expectations conflict with reality. You step out into a new challenge with a clear plan, a solid tool in hand, and the best of intentions.

Then, a sudden gust of wind hits. Suddenly your perfectly functional system is inverted, exposed, and pointing the wrong way. Just like an umbrella flipping inside out during a big gust of wind.

In business, scaling works the same way. You build a process that works perfectly in normal conditions. But when the winds of rapid growth, market shifts, or sudden operational bottlenecks hit, your standard systems can flip inside out.

Expect the gust:

You can't control the weather, but you can build flexibility into your infrastructure.

When things invert, is your business resilient enough to snap back into place, or will it break permanently?

Pause and reflect to ensure you are prepared for a surprise storm:

• Will your business continue to run if you are unexpectedly absent for a week or more?

  • If not, what safety net do you need? You may need a team member or systems that would keep operations running without you.

• Do you have at least one team member who is cross-trained to cover during a sudden absence of someone else?

• Grab a piece of paper right now and write down 3 - 10 events that have happened in your life and business, from which you bounced back. This is a great reminder that you are resilient and you have the wisdom within to weather the current and next storm!

Laugh it off and pivot:

Notice the smile in the photo? Half the battle of scaling a business is maintaining composure, finding the humor in the chaos, and pivoting promptly when things don't go according to plan.
